Don’t forget the Little Things in Life

blogentry_michaelI’ve mentioned it time and time again but the world will eat up your time and you will often sit back and think to yourself where did it all go?

One of the things I was reminded of the other day is that we really need to take the time to appreciate the little things in life. Sure you can have a bad day. You could even have a bad week or a bad month but the truth is, there is always something positive that you can get from a situation.

For example, you might be working a lot of hours and you might feel exhausted at the end of the day. But instead of focusing on that, think about how rewarding it will be to relax at the end of the day or to even just sleep at the end of the day. On top of that, there had to be some nice things in your day whether it’s as simple as a thank you or someone holding the door for you. Little things are always there in life and it’s up to you to notice them or not.

I think that’s one of the problems society has nowadays. There is such a focus on the negative and the drama in life. We often get so frustrated because of the bigger picture and how bleak it is when you put everything together.

Think about the typical couple trying to make it in America. If you put together the issues that they have including how to live paycheck to paycheck, having kids, potentially going to school, mowing the lawn, taking care of family, all of it together makes it a very daunting and rather bleak picture. But if you consistently look at the little things in life and appreciate everything that is given to you, it becomes a better perspective. For example, every time a paycheck comes in, allow yourself a little bit for rewards for you and the family and make it a positive thing in addition to paying the bills. For taking care of kids, just remember how proud you are of them or how awesome it is to watch them grow up and succeed. If we take the time to notice the little things, it makes us better able to digest the bigger picture and raise our morale.

I must admit in my life, I always tend to get bogged down. But I need to remember the little things in my life… Twix being so excited whenever I take him outside. The times I do get to play videogames. Writing in this blog. Getting complimented for good work. A hug and a kiss from Krista. Those are the things that make life worth living. It’s what gives you that passion and drive to go forward when times are tough.

I would say in addition to finding the little things that happen to you, be proactive and do little things for others. Help people out. Make someone’s day. Try something new. You never know how awesome you might make someone feel. Remember we all have a lot on our plates, that’s why we have others around us to help carry the dishes sometimes :)
